As my first review, I have chosen Penumbra Overture.
The first thing I will say is that this game is SCARY. Compared to Penumbra, Silent Hill is as scary as Peggle.
The atmosphere in this game is just amazing. It really gives you the feeling of loneliness and abandonment. It creates that “tense” kind of scary that I personally love in my horror games, the kind where you are always on your toes and anticipating something, as opposed to the “things just jump out and surprise you” scary. You’ll be hiding from enemies ensuring that they do not get close enough to you to see you. You will need to do such things as blocking doors with heavy objects in order to prevent anyone, or anything, from following you.
This brings me to another thing that I love about this game, the physics. Imagine a simplified source engine, with much more emphasis on weight and density. You can break wood that is blocking a doorway with your hammer in order to get past, and you will be lifting and throwing many things like rocks out of your way to uncover things, after all you are in an abandoned mine.
You will be scanning your surroundings for supplies like batteries for your flashlight, painkillers for health, flares, and other useful items. Many items are scarce and hidden in file cabinets, drawers, and under rock piles. You will also find notes scattered around that will give you hints as to the disturbing past of the mine that you are trapped in.
Overall, Penumbra Overture is an amazing game, the atmosphere is amazing, the controls are solid, the setting and plot are both disturbing, and the overall design is fantastic. For the great price of a penny(or more) while the Humble Indie Bundle lasts, it is extremely worth the price.
I strongly recommend Penumbra to any horror game fan. Buy it.
